Introducing Mitome

Mitome delivers the world’s first comprehensive mitochondrial analysis—revealing what your cells truly need to slow aging and restore energy at the source, developed by Chris Masterjohn, PhD.

Chris Masterjohn, PhD, is a leading expert in nutritional science with a background in the biochemistry and molecular biology of nutrition.

As founder of Mitome, he is bringing mitochondrial testing out of the rare-disease space and into everyday health. Using advanced analysis of electron transport chain activity to classify individuals into distinct mitochondrial types and generate personalized, science-backed protocols for optimizing the machinery that produces 90% of our cellular energy.

  • He received his PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Connecticut at Storrs in 2012, served as a postdoctoral research associate in the Comparative Biosciences department of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's College of Veterinary Medicine from 2012-2014,
served as Assistant Professor of Health and Nutrition Sciences at Brooklyn College from 2014-2017. In 2016, Chris transitioned from academia to entrepreneurship, allowing him to focus on independent research, consulting, and developing technology and educational products.

  • His expertise is in how nutrition, lifestyle, and supplementation impact mitochondrial health, and on how to use lab testing to assess mitochondrial function and document the progress in mitochondrial optimization.

  • Chris is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of nutritional science. His work has been featured in The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss and on popular podcasts like The Drive with Peter Attia and The Genius Life with Max Lugavere. He has published works in journals such as the Journal of American Cardiology, the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, Experimental Biology and Medicine, the American Heart Journal, the Journal of Medical Food, and Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and more.

Chris also serves on the advisory board of the Kresser Institute, is a scientific advisor to Ample, and was a founding board member of the Ancestral Health Society.

  • Chris’ mission is to synthesize what we have discovered in fields related to the practical biology of human health to help individuals optimize their nutrition around their most important mitochondrial bottlenecks, leading to improved wellness, performance, and longevity.

What Members Think

  • "Chris Masterjohn’s MasterPass provides fantastic synopses of extremely complex nutrition topics. He is thorough and articulates nutrition information in ways that make sense. Fantastic!"

    Dr. Deborah Langheld

    ND, MPH

  • "Chris Masterjohn takes a comprehensive approach including 1) scholarly and critical approach by digging through the published literature, 2) functional approach by analyzing the biochemical pathways 3) understanding variability among individuals by showing what genetic polymorphisms change individual requirements. I know of no other who can do all this."

    - Harold W.

  • "Very in-depth info on much of what is important for health and no commercial interests involved. Here one gets insights that one cannot find in other places and that is approached from different angles."
